Fine/Oily Hair Care Routine

27 Jul 2015

I love myself a good hair day just as much as the next girl does but boy do I hate doing it. Hair is usually the last thing I do in my morning routine and it's very minimalistic. (It's also because I'm lazy but I'm leaving that part out). I was blessed with the baby fine and lifeless hair that is usually very dry and frizzy but also extremely oily. I'm the girl that can say I have 99 problems and they are all my hair, okay? I'm not a hair expert nor will I ever be but these are just tips and tricks and products I have found to work the best for me!

I'm one of those people who has to wash their hair every day so that's where my routine starts. I'm not overly picky with my shampoo brands because I switch frequently so as long as it says something about volume, moisture or damage control, it's good enough for me. As of lately I have been using the Aussie Moist Shampoo and Conditioner and it has been lovely! It hasn't made by hair too greasy but makes everything manageable and smooth and that smell, though. It makes me want to live at a beach but real life says otherwise. Once or twice a week I like to give my hair a really good deep condition to try and counteract the heat I use on my hair. Let's just say it works that way, okay? I usually use the L'Oreal Arginine Resist One Minute Conditioning Mask (Try saying that three times fast) which is pretty good. The only thing I haven't enjoyed is the smell but you don't notice it once your hair is dry so Beauty is Pain right? I've also been using the Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner and I seriously love this stuff! It's been years since I've seen it in stores so you can imagine my excitement when I found it at Superstore! There might have been a happy dance in the aisle. There also might have been an embarrassed little sister who almost left me but it gave her a good laugh! The smell matches the Moist Shampoo line so I'm a happy woman when I use them together.

When I get out of the shower, I throw my hair up in a towel for ten minutes to get any extra water out and take it out when I finish my makeup. I start out with the Tresemme Keratin Smooth Serum, which is hands down the best thing that has ever been put into my hair. It makes everything so soft and smooth BUT doesn't make my hair oily! This has been a reoccurring problem with most serums I have bought and had to con off on family members or roommates when they didn't work. I can also use this on dry hair and have had no oiliness so that's a bonus! After I just use a little bit of the Tresemme Platinum Strength Heat Spray and I'm ready to blow dry. You can add this to dry hair if your worried but it's too much for my hair so I skip it.

Sometimes if I want a little more volume I'll use the Paul Mitchell Styling Extra-Body Daily Boost Root Lifter Spray. Be warned that this can get very sticky, though. I only spray it twice and then massage it in for the best results and if you feel like using more, you can go from there. This gives my hair just the right amount life and volume and quickly became a staple product.

I don't do anything fancy with my styling so I won't bore you with those details much. I just tend to blow dry my hair either upside down or in the opposite direction that it usually lays and then give it a quick straighten.

Some extra little tips and tricks when it comes to fine or oily hair:

1. Less is more- When it comes to fine or oily hair, the less product you put on your hair is often more than enough! Think of this idea like a freshly washed car. Do you really want to go through mud puddles after you put the effort to clean it? Probably not...but you do you boo boo. Try limiting your hair routine to a couple of really good products and you'll really see a difference.

2. Dry Shampoo is your BFF- There will be days where you wake up late and have no time to wash your hair. There will also be days where you just don't want to wash it, let's face it. Investing in a good dry shampoo to boost your confidence and make your hair look better makes the world of difference! I've found great luck with both Batiste Dry Shampoo as well as Got2B Rockin' It Encore Dry Shampoo so definitely check those out if you out if you're in the market for a new one. The matching dry conditioner is great for extra frizz and shine after you finish styling! If you have especially oily hair try putting some in your hair before bed to let it really soak in and give you extra volume! This will save you a little extra time trying to work in the product in the morning.

3. Don't be afraid to try new things! - Hair care is often an area left unexplored but it's actually encouraged! How else are you going to find that next holy grail product? Girl, I don't even want to know how much money I've spent on products that haven't worked out so if you're worried about here is a tip: Check sites like Makeup Alley for reviews before you purchase! This way you can get the general census for a product before you commit.

4. Invest in a good hairspray- Fine hair doesn't tend to hold the style for more than a few hours so finding a good hairspray will make your life so much easier. I really like the Pantene Smooth Humidity Proof Hairspray because it gives great hold but doesn't make your hair sticky or crunchy! Plus it smells pretty good. Humidity can also ruin your style so this hairspray has you covered as well. Quick tip- Hairspray also can make things like clips and pins grip your hair better! Just spray before or after you get them into place and you should be good to go!

This is what my hair usually looks like when everything is said and done! Not too bad, eh?

My Summer Reading List

22 Jul 2015

I know I'm a little late on the summer reading train but with just over a month left to my summer break, I figured why not! I love reading what other people have been reading so today I'm going to share the list that I have been working through over the past few months. But before I get to that I would like to share a little story from the past that inspires me to keep reading even after all this time.

Reading has always played a huge role in my life, even from a young age. One might blame this on my mom, a teacher who loved books but one of my most favorite memories of my childhood was the Summer Reading Program that my local library put on throughout the summer. It's funny to think that my twin sister and I were more excited to do this over any other "normal" summer activities. The program also came with the promise of prizes and cake at the end of the summer, which I'm thinking was also a motivating factor in wanting to read. Free things!! What I find so interesting is that even at this age, I loved being able to escape reality and get lost in a great book. Call me a nerd but my favorite days were the ones where I got to return all of the books I had read and spend the afternoon looking for new ones. It's safe to say that I was well read at twelve years old.

Now that I'm in university reading purely for pleasure has become a bit of a foreign concept. I admit to trying to read the odd book in the bath without trying to drop it into the bubbles. However on the usual school day, I'm too busy drowning in homework to even think about reading anything else! When my school work calms down and summer break finally rolls around, the promise of more freedom to curl up and read more books sounds wonderful! The sun, a warm breeze, a cold drink and a great book? to quote Amy Poehler... Yes Please!

Pinterest has been my outlet for finding so many great recommendations, so I have compiled a small list of books that I want to read before summer comes to a close! I actually had to limit myself or else I wouldn't get anything done. I keep all my book pins on a board which you can check out here if you are interesting in finding some recommendations for your own summer reading lists! I'm guilty of getting ahead of myself so I've already started three out of four on my list and have zero complaints so far!

The first book that I'm excited to read is An Abundance of Katherines by John Green. It's been on my mental reading list for ages now so I figured I give it a try this summer. I'm a huge fan of John Green with The Fault in Our Stars being my all time favorite book. It's supposed to be very good so I'm looking forward finishing it! I'm about halfway through right now and love John's writing style so it's been a pleasure to read!

Second on my list is The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. I hadn't heard of this author before until it was mentioned on a blog written by somebody who attends my university. His whole post was very uplifting and definitely inspired me to pick up my own copy. I haven't gotten too far into the book but so far I've been hooked. I love that it's inspirational in the best of ways but never cheesy like some of those types of books can be. It's relatable, humorous and bound to leave a lasting smile on your face! I've been waiting for a spare moment to be able to sit down and start this book so being able to check it off my list will be wonderful!

I've also gotten half way through my third choice, The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. I've really been liking this pick! It's similar to the story of William and Kate if anybody is familiar but has twists and changes along the way to make it unique. I quickly fell in love with all the characters in chapter one, so much that I can't put this book down for the life of me. Its plotline has been humorous so far and I'm looking forward to seeing what else will happen as I keep reading.

The last book that I'm hoping to read before school gets started again is Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave. This one was really popular when I was doing some research on books to read. I admit that one of the factors in choosing this book was how gorgeous the cover art was. Before you start throwing rotten things at me, I know that you're not supposed to do this but I'm guilty of loving books that are visually appealing. Of course, I take into account the story line when picking books out to read but I can't resist a good cover. I don't know too much about the story line but from what I read, it sounds very lovely!

What have you been reading this summer?

14 Things That Make Me Happy

18 Jul 2015

“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”- Albus Dumbledore

Happy Saturday! Who's excited that it's finally the weekend? I know I was. Today I'm sharing a list of fourteen things that make me happy! I was really excited to share this because not only do I get to rave about all my favorite things, but you guys get to know a little more about me.

I have also included a collage of some of the things on the list as a way to share some of my favorite pictures of these things. I just thought it was a neat way to give you guys a visual of who/what I'm talking about!

Now onto the list:

1. My Boyfriend- He shamelessly said I could talk about him anytime I wanted on my blog so here you go, babe. This guy is my world. As cheesy as this is about to sound, he's everything you'd want in a man and more. I can't begin to imagine my life without someone as wonderfully kind and loving as he is. Our relationship isn't perfect by any means but that's the beauty of it... It's ours. We might disagree on things and have the occasional fight but he makes everything so incredibly worth it.

2. My Family- I don't know what I would do without their endless love and support... These guys are seriously the best. My three sisters mean the world to me and I love each and every moment we get to spend together.

3. My Friends- Because my life would be so boring without them. I'm so blessed to have an amazing group of friends who love to have fun as much as I do.

4. Cozy naps- I love sleep, period. I'm one of those people who is constantly pressing snooze and testing the limits of how long I need to get ready in the morning, just for the sake of those extra five or ten minutes. There is nothing better then curling up with a couple of blankets and having a nice little afternoon snooze to get you through the rest of the day.

5. Tea- Anytime of the day is perfect for a cuppa in my world.  It's my saving grace when I have too much homework (that I've probably procrastinated let's be honest) and my way of relaxing at the end of a long day

6. My cat- We have a love/hate relationship most of the time. She's a spoiled diva who gets half of my bed at night and the reason I probably have back issues.

7. Fuzzy socks- They are seriously the most coziest thing of life and my go thing when I get home.. I still wear them in the summer because I love them too much to give up. I'm hesitant to mention that my collection has gotten so big that it could use it's own separate drawer so maybe I need fuzzy sock rehab.

8. Sunny days- I love getting out for some fresh air and days where the sun is shining and the temperature is warm make for great adventures.

9. Getting mail- I know you're probably saying "Who the heck gets excited over mail in 2015" and that's probably true but it's the little things, okay? There is just something about getting mail that makes me oddly happy... Except for when it's a bill because being an adult sucks.

10. Getting lost in a good book- There is really nothing like it. During the school year I don't have the time I would like to read but now that things have calmed down for the summer I have found myself getting into all kinds of new books. I plan on writing about them so look out for that most later this month!

11.Traveling- I admit that I haven't done much traveling outside of the maritime provinces but I love a good road trip. No matter how big or small of an adventure you can always count me in with playlists and snacks at the ready.

12. Cookies-  I'm probably the reason why the song "Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar" was invented. Double stuffed oreos are my guilty pleasure and I could eat them for every meal if I could.

13. Netflix- I'm not the biggest movie or TV person but I do love the occasional binge watch. Friends, Chasing Life, and Sherlock are my top three right now!

14. Taking bubble baths- Nothing says relaxation quite like a warm bath with lots of bubbles, a good book, soft music and lots of candles

What makes you happy?

Meltproof Summer Makeup

5 Jul 2015

Now that the summer is finally here, I admit to finding my makeup routine very tedious, especially in the sweltering and warm weather. I'm definitely not complaining though... who doesn't love relaxing by the pool or taking a day trip to the beach? Add a fruity cold beverage and some ice cream and you've got the perfect summer day. I'm just making myself jealous here. Although I'm not a makeup professional by any means, I thought I would share some of my holy grail beauty products and tips for the summer to avoid those melted makeup mishaps and to keep yourself looking fresh and cool in the hottest of temperatures!

One of the worst feelings is a caked up and heavy face... Am I right? Makeup and summer naturally don't get along very well but that doesn't always have to be the case! I know you're probably thinking "Who wears makeup if they are going to the beach?" And you definitely don't need to. There are no makeup police so if au natural is what you aim for then by all means do that. Personally speaking, I feel so much better knowing that I look somewhat decent even though I feel like the sweaty mess. You do you boo boo.

One of the most important tips that I can offer you is to wear SPF. I'm not here to mother anybody but I can't stress how important wearing an SPF on your face is. I wouldn't recommend slapping any old sunscreen on the face as they could clog pores and cause irritation. If you are going the sunscreen route make sure that it's specifically for your face. Many foundations and face lotions also include SPF! I prefer this method to get a little bit more hydration for my drier skin. I'm currently using a Revlon Photoready BB cream when I know I'll be going out into the sun for long periods of time and it's wonderful. It also adds a little bit of coverage so there isn't a need to apply as much foundation. Also, make sure that you are drinking lots of water when out in the sun to avoid getting heat stroke or dehydration. Your skin will thank you in the long run!

  • Foundation: Covergirl CG Smoothers All-Day Hydrating Makeup
  • Concealers:  Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Dark-Circle Roller, MAC Pro Longwear Concealer, and Maybelline FaceStudio Master Concealer
  • Powder: Wet 'n' Wild Coverall Pressed Powder
  • Bronzer: Maybelline Fit Me Pressed Powder in 320 (Honey Beige)
  • Blush: The Body Shop Baked-To-Last Blush in 01 (Petal)
I love experimenting with different brands in both the drugstore and higher end but I've found myself constantly going back to this little gem of a product. The CoverGirl CG Smoothers foundation is water-based and super hydrating on my dry skin! It has light but buildable coverage making it perfect for the humid and hot weather and lasts forever once it's set. Since the foundation offers a lighter coverage and I have some serious panda eyes, I like to go in with a few concealers to brighten everything up and convince the public that I actually sleep. I will first use a few layers of the Garnier Skin Renew Concealer which is a dream. The metal ball is so refreshing under the eyes and brightens up my dark circles even the darkest of circles. For extra coverage I usually use either my MAC Pro Longwear or Maybelline FaceStudio Concealers and let me tell you... these bad boys do not budge at all!! The only downside is that you have to be careful with the amount you use or else you'll be fine line city. After everything is on, I set my face with a little bit of powder. This Coverall Pressed Powder is only about three dollars and does the job just as good any pricer one would! I'm not the oiliest of people but my face stays Matte for a long time after I use this.

To add some color back into my freakishly pale skin, I've been using a darker pressed powder and this baked blush from The Body Shop. It's a struggle to find a bronzer that doesn't make pale skin look dirty but this pressed powder is perfect! The shade I have is Honey Beige and it leaves my skin looking naturally skin kissed which I love! I have both shades of this Baked-To-Last blush that I bought for a couple of dollars randomly but I definitely have been preferring the Petal shade. It gives my skin the prettiest flush of color with a the perfect amount of shimmer. It's very pigmented so apply with a light hand or else you'll look feverish. It also has a build in highlighter that I have been applying to the apples of my cheeks to give me a dewy and healthy glow.

  • Eyeshadow Primer- I Love Stage Eyeshadow Base
  • Eyeshadow: BH Cosmetic It's Judy Time -Limited Edition- Eyeshadow Palette
  • Eyeliner- L'Oreal Carbon Black Linear Intense Felt Tip Liquid Eyeliner in Carbon Black
  • Mascara- L'Oreal Telescopic Shocking Extensions Mascara in Blackest Black and Cover Girl Clump Crusher Mascara in Very Black
I try to keep things very simple and natural in the summer unless I have to go somewhere fancy. (I usually don't if I'm being honest here). I love using this eyeshadow palette from BH Cosmetics because you can create endless looks that are both natural and dramatic. The shadows are all very pigmented and apply very smooth and evenly with a brush or fingers if you are lazy like I am sometimes. They last quite a long time on their own but for extra insurance, I love throwing a little of the Essence Eyeshadow base under them. Pencil Eyeliners tend to smudge and move around in hot weather so I recommend using a good liquid eyeliner like the L'Oreal Carbon Black Felt Tip Liner. This seriously doesn't budge which makes it perfect for any weather! I always finish off my makeup with a couple of coats of mascara or else I feel naked. I've been loving a combination of the Clump Crusher Mascara and Shocking Extensions Mascara! It gives my lashes a little extra length and volume without looking spidery and has never flaked out on me. The best part is that the CoverGirl mascara is water resistant so it's perfect for the pool or beach! Bonus.

  • Milani Color Statement Lipstick in 15 (Hot Pink Rage)
  • Essence Long Lasting Lipstick in 07 (Natural Beauty)
  • Essence Long Lasting Lipstick in 01 (Coral Calling)
  • Essence Long Lasting Lipstick in 16 (I Am Yours!)
  • L'Oreal Colour Riche Lipstick in 181(Sheer Linen)
I love my lipsticks, anybody who knows me will tell you that! However, I'm not the biggest lipstick wearer in the summer because I find them to be sticky and heavy. I have been getting around this by creating a tinted lip balm out of them so that I don't have to give them up completely for the summer! I find myself reaching for fun colors like brighter corals and pinks because they just scream summer to me. However if I'm going for a more natural look I will wear a muted pink or nude color. To make my tinted balm, I've been using my EOS Smooth Stick Lip Balm in Strawberry Sorbet and adding a little bit of lipstick over top. This adds the prettiest splash of color to my summer looks but never feels heavy and keeps my lips soft and moisturized!

Take two! Remember me?

4 Jul 2015

Hi, My name is Mikayla and I have a serious confession to make. I am guilty of getting excited about projects only to start and never finish them... Sound relatable? I started this blog in 2013 as a way to keep busy during the summer between my first and second year. However as the summer ended and my school year began, I quickly got caught up in new friendships and school life and forgot about the blog that I had put so much effort and time into designing.

Fast forward to today and I'm finally at a point in my life that I could have only dreamed about a short time ago. How was the road getting here? To put into the simplest of terms... Awful. I've gained so many wonderful people in my life that I am very grateful for, but at the same time I have lost many who I cherished the most. Do I regret any of it? Not at all. I have matured and grown so much over the past two years and I can honestly say that I love the way things are going. I have the best boyfriend a girl could ask for and a very loving and supportive group of family and friends who mean the world to me and I wouldn't trade any of them for the world.

I've finally figured out that in order to find who you are truly meant to be, you can't be afraid to take risks and say "yes" or "no". You can't be afraid to cut the people who bring you down in your life out (Even though it can be the hardest decision you'll make). You can't be afraid to try new things and be adventurous. You also can't be afraid to take back control of your life and start making choices for yourself. Ultimately, I choose to be happy regardless of thoughts or opinions of me. This is who I am and I'm not apologizing!

As I look forward to starting the final chapter of my undergraduate experience, I felt like it would be a great time to bring back this blog, however with a new and improved purpose: To share my interests and hobbies without judgement, to give advice and inspiration to those who might need it and to continue my journey as I prepare to enter the "adult world". I have huge dreams for my future and I can't wait to see what is in store for me and share it with the world.

Without further adieu, I present my blog thatluckieone... take two!
